It’s no secret that we here at the Brattle are big fans of the classic British TV show DR. WHO in all of its variations. It should come as no surprise then that we were saddened to hear of the passing earlier this year of two of the long-running show’s most enduring character actors. As Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, the stuffy, frequently bewildered military foil to the flamboyant Doctor, Nicholas Courtney was an important figure during one particular era of the show. More iconic was the Doctor’s former companion, Sarah Jane Smith. played by Elisabeth Sladen. Sladen contributed to one of the most emotionally complex moments in the new run of DR. WHO in the episode SCHOOL REUNION, earning herself a spinoff show. We also celebrate the new incarnation of the Doctor, Matt Smith, with his debut episode, THE ELEVENTH HOUR, and the highly anticipated THE DOCTOR’S WIFE, written by acclaimed novelist (and geek fave) Neil Gaiman.
