Remember New Year’s Eve 1999? Everyone feeling a little crazy and onedge about the coming millennium? Everyone half-expecting reality to start coming apart at the seams? Well, in Kathryn Bigelow’s terrific sci-fi/neo-noir thriller, it’s New Year’s 1999 all over again – except it’s even more chaotic and out of control. While the world is partying, loser ex-cop Lenny Nero (Fiennes) seems content to wallow in his self-loathing. Lenny deals in “squids,” illegal recordings that allow the user to physically and emotionally experience another person’s memories. When Lenny finds himself in possession of a very nasty recording that some very bad people want very badly, he and his friend Mace (Bassett) must race against the clock to unravel a shocking conspiracy.
