(2010) dir Patricio Guzmán [90 min]
For his new film, master director Patricio Guzmán (The Battle Of Chile) travels to the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert in Chile. The sky is so translucent there that astronomers from all over the world gather to observe the stars. Meanwhile, at ground level, the sun preserves secrets from the past: the remains of political prisoners “disappeared” in the 1970s. So it happens that, while above astronomers examine the most distant galaxies, below the relatives of the disappeared search for the remains of their loved ones. A gorgeous and moving meditation on memory, history and eternity.
“Stunningly beautiful. I don’t know how you can put more into a film, or make one that’s more deeply moving.” —Stuart Klawans, The Nation
