(2010) dir Takashi Miike w/Kôji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada [141 min]
Forget those Hollywood blockbusters with all their fancy superheroes, this just may be the best action film of 2011. Set in feudal Japan, 13 ASSASSINS features Koji Yakusho as Shimada, an aging samurai charged with leading a secret rebellion against a sadistic lord. To this end, Shimada recruits an oddball team with whom he plots to ambush the lord and his formidable bodyguards. The film culminates in a 45 minute orchestrated action sequence that must be seen to be believed.
Winner of the Audience Award at the 2011 Independent Film Festival Boston.
