The Brattle’s favorite Hollywood love affair is, obviously, that of Humphrey Bogart and Lauran Bacall. Their infatuation with each other onscreen and off was so obvious that it could not be denied. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, Bogie and Bacall’s first film together, is nominally based on a Hemingway novel, but is really just a great excuse for snappy and sexy repartee. Bogart’s lines are good, but Bacall’s are even better.
