(1962) dir Stanley Kubrick w/James Mason, Sue Lyon, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers [152 min]
Stanley Kubrick’s unforgettable version of Vladimir Nabokov’s subjective novel of obsessive love features the great James Mason as Humbert Humbert, a man at the mercy of his passion for his underage stepdaughter, Lolita (Lyon). Humbert first marries Lolita’s mother Charlotte (Winters) so that he can be closer to the girl and then, after Charlotte’s accidental death, he takes Lolita on a cross-country journey to Ohio where he has accepted a teaching position. Even after they have settled however, Humbert can’t relax – partly because of his taboo relationship with Lolita, but also because of the repeated appearances of weird stranger Clare Quilty (Sellers).
