‘Celine and Julie Go Boating’ reviews

“A Winding Trip Reverberates in Cinema,” by Dennis Lim, The New York Times

“‘Celine and Julie Go Boating’ is a Ty Burr Favorite”The Boston Globe

“★★★★★” —Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York

“★★★★” —Joseph Jon Lanthier, Slant Magazine

“This gently gonzo meditation on fiction and reality, surrealism and sisterhood, is unlike any other movie you’ve seen. It plays a little like a Charlie Kaufman meta-movie three decades ahead of schedule. It’s also what might happen if “Alice in Wonderland” collided with “Thelma and Louise.”” —Ty Burr, The Boston Globe (Read the Review)

CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING plays Friday, August 3 through Sunday, August 5 with shows daily at 2:15 and 6:00 pm.

CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (1974) dir Jacques Rivette w/Juliet Berto, Dominique Labourier, Bulle Ogier, Marie-France Pisier, Barbet Schroeder [193 min]
This magical tale recounts the adventures of Julie, a librarian, and the flamboyant Celine, a magician of sorts – a kind of White Rabbit who leads Julie right through the Looking Glass into a world of her imagination. With the help of some magic, memory-inducing candy, Celine and Julie get plugged into a bizarre drama in a mysterious, possibly haunted, house. They enter the house in the guise of nurses and encounter two women who are in love with the same man. The man is a widower who had promised his wife that he would not remarry as long as their invalid daughter was alive. As the competition in the triangle reaches a murderous level, the highspirited heroines plot a daring rescue of the young victim. One of the seminal films of the 1970s, CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING is a brilliant meditation on the art of cinema and the nature of fantasy. It is regarded by many as New Wave master Jacques Rivette’s most accomplished film.
