Double Feature with OSS 117: LOST IN RIO.
(1959) dir Carol Reed w/Alec Guinness, Maureen O’Hara, Noel Coward [111 min]
Alongside Le Carré, Graham Greene is another acclaimed name in espionage fiction – though his approach is generally more sardonic, using spy fiction to poke at the cynicism and corruption rampant in foreign policy. In OUR MAN IN HAVANA, a vacuum cleanser salesman, James Wormold (Guiness), in pre-revolutionary Cuba is recruited by the British to lead their Havana espionage operation. Instead of hiring actual agents, though, Wormold scams the agency, creating fake agents and false information. When his fictional intelligence strays too close to the truth, however, Wormold becomes a target and his operation begins to unravel.
