(2002) dir Paul Thomas Anderson w/Adam Sandler, Emily Watson [95 min]
A seemingly out-of-left-field choice for the director of MAGNOLIA and BOOGIE NIGHTS, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is a whimsical, tightly contained film about Barry (Sandler), a lonely man who runs a novelty items business and is constantly at the mercy of his six overbearing sisters. Barry’s life begins to change when he has a seemingly chance encounter with the delightfully quirky Lena (Watson). Barry gains confidence, learns to control his anger, and experiences joy, but a run in with a cut-rate phone sex company may threaten his newfound happiness.
