(2007) dir Paul Thomas Anderson w/Daniel Day-Lewis, Dillon Freasier, Paul Dano [158 min]
This stunning period piece about a turn-of-the-century oil magnate is, perhaps, Anderson’s masterpiece. Daniel Plainview is a selfmade man, a prospector who discovered oil and built it into a very profitable business, but he has rarely been touched by emotion. With his adopted son H.W. (Freasier) by his side, Plainview ruthlessly pursues his business empire. Not only is every aspect of the filmmaking process flawlessly executed (from the brilliant score by Jonny Greenwood to the gorgeous cinematography by longtime collaborator Robert Elswit) but the performance by Daniel Day-Lewis as Plainview is absolutely awe inspiring.
