(2011) dir Anne Fontaine w/Isabelle Huppert, Benôit Poelvoorde [103 min, digital presentation]
The great Isabelle Huppert plays Agathe, an impossibly uptight and bitchy Parisian gallery curator who lives in a posh apartment with her publisher husband and their young son. When Patrick, the deadbeat dad of their son’s best friend, is introduced to the mix, Agathe’s life is turned upside-down. First her husband leaves her for a younger woman, then her son is accused of cheating at school, and finally she can’t seem to get rid of Patrick. The two are like oil and water but it doesn’t keep Patrick from trying to loosen Agathe up – by any means necessary. Writer/director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel) brings a wry touch to this sparkling – and oh-so-French – romantic comedy.
