Tickets $10, $8 Students, Seniors, Brattle Members | No Brattle Passes

80 min, USA, 2012
“What does the writing process of Swedish folk artist José González look like? A voyeuristic security camera in his soundproof recording studio reveals the painstaking routine, loneliness, boredom and silence that eventually give root to the whimsical sound of his much anticipated second album, In Our Nature. What does he think about while he’s brushing his teeth? Sitting on his tour bus? Eating his breakfast? Playful animation depicts González’ inner monologue and esoteric musings on Darwinism, the sun, his existence and the challenges of writing. One can’t help but be mesmerized by the understated yet powerful sound that emanates from the lone guitarist on stage. With intimacy and insight, Mikel Cee Karlsson and Fredrik Egerstrand capture a portrait of a humble and contemplative musical mind.”
– Lynne Crocker, Hot Docs

The screening of THE EXTRAORDINARY ORDINARY LIFE OF JOSE GONZALEZ will be preceded by an episode from Alex Jablonski’s SPARROW SONGS, a project in which the filmmaker Alex Jablonski and cinematographer Michael Totten made and exhibited one short documentary per month, every month for one year.

On July 3, 1999, Mark Sandman, the charismatic frontman of the alternative band Morphine, sadly passed away while performing at a festival in Italy. His death left a huge, unmendable hole in the Boston music scene and a slew of fans around the world wondering what could have been had he stayed with us just a little longer. Now, filmmakers Robert Bralver and David Ferino have created an engaging documentary about this immensely creative – and immensely private – person. Featuring interviews with other altmusic stars as well as Sandman’s former bandmates, friends and family, CURE FOR PAIN reveals an intense, driven individual who kept the truth about his inner demons away from everyone – choosing instead to channel his experiences into poetic, cryptic lyrics and soaring, poignant songwriting.

Harvard Book Store is pleased to welcome MSNBC’s CHRISTOPHER HAYES for a discussion of his new book, Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy.

Over the past decade, Americans watched in bafflement and rage as one institution after another – from Wall Street to Congress, the Catholic Church to corporate America, even Major League Baseball – imploded under the weight of corruption and incompetence. In the wake of the Fail Decade, Americans have historically low levels of trust in their institutions; the social contract between ordinary citizens and elites lies in tatters.

How did we get here? With Twilight of the Elites, Christopher Hayes offers a radically novel answer. Since the 1960s, as the meritocracy elevated a more diverse group of men and women into power, they learned to embrace the accelerating inequality that had placed them near the very top. Their ascension heightened social distance and spawned a new American elite–one more prone to failure and corruption than any that came before it.

Mixing deft political analysis, timely social commentary, and deep historical understanding,Twilight of the Elites describes how the society we have come to inhabit – utterly forgiving at the top and relentlessly punitive at the bottom – produces leaders who are out of touch with the people they have been trusted to govern. Hayes argues that the public’s failure to trust the federal government, corporate America, and the media has led to a crisis of authority that threatens to engulf not just our politics but our day-to-day lives.

Upending well-worn ideological and partisan categories, Hayes entirely reorients our perspective on our times. Twilight of the Elites is the defining work of social criticism for the post-bailout age.
