In celebration of International Women’s Day, this series showcases real-life stories of exceptional women told by acclaimed women filmmakers and screenwriters. Beyond boilerplate biopics, these films span a variety of styles, time periods, and geographies. Some subjects are more familiar (Emily Dickinson, Frida Kahlo, Harriet Tubman) while some are lesser-known (Polly Bemis, Fumiko Nakajō, Karen Silkwood), but all lived remarkable lives, defied gender expectations, and made their mark on the world around them.
