On the occasion of Columbia Pictures’ 100th birthday, we bring you this deep dive into the tune-filled world of the movie musical—and musical movie—produced by the studio throughout their history. From star vehicles for the effervescent Rita Hayworth through the rock’n’roll revolution of the ‘50s and ‘60s to new school musicals of the 1980s and beyond, Columbia has never been strongly associated with the movie musical but music has always been deeply enmeshed in their business.
