Friday Film Matinee
For this week’s Friday Film Matinee, we present this 1965 curiosity—a ‘beach blanket bingo’ style teen romp with musical performances by The Righteous Brothers, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, The Rip Chords, and Raquel Welch who makes her first credited on screen appearance here.
This will probably the last voyage of this Technicolor print from the recent collection we acquired from RISD. This copy has an advanced case of what is known as ‘vinegar syndrome’—a condition that certain film prints can get that causes chemical decomposition and, worst of all, it can easily spread to other prints. It will still run through the projector one last time but it will need to be isolated from the rest of the collection and will deteriorate further until it becomes unplayable.
The Friday Film Matinee is an ongoing program at The Brattle featuring special screenings of 35mm prints on Friday afternoons. We know that seeing a film on 35mm is worth skipping class or leaving work early for so come play hooky with us as we celebrate the magic of ‘reel film’ at The Brattle!
This program is funded in part by The Brattle’s 35mm Film Fund. Donations to this fund maintain our film projection equipment, train future projectionists, and ensure that The Brattle will be able to continue 35mm screenings well into the future.
