At press time, we can’t say which Oscars ANORA has won, but it seems like it’s on an inevitable march to take home some gold statues on March 2—and we couldn’t be more pleased! Sean Baker’s frank, humanizing, and entertaining films are always favorites here at The Brattle and ANORA is perhaps his most well-realized to date. It’s a sort of neo-screwball dramedy with Mikey Madison playing the irrepressible Ani, a young sex worker who gets in over even her capable head when she meets and impulsively marries the impetuous young son of a Russian billionaire. Culminating in a New York City odyssey in the vein of Scorsese’s After Hours or a gentler version of the Safdies’ Uncut Gems, ANORA is one of the most exciting films of 2024.
