BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! may be the apotheosis of the idiosyncratic style of über-quirky Canadian director, Guy Maddin. This supposedly autobiographical film reveals Maddin’s hellish childhood on a remote island, under the hyper-watchful eye of a crazed mother and a diabolically distant scientist-father – proprietors of an underground, mom-and-pop orphanage they operate out of the family lighthouse.
