Make no mistake, this film is a horrible disaster. Stories from behind the scenes are bananas (Peter O’Toole was reportedly paid with a case of champagne for his cameo, Welles and Sellers were never on set together, etc) and it took 6 directors and 3 (credited) screenwriters to get it completed. That being said, as a madcap spoof of the James Bond films starring some truly remarkable comedic talents, it is strangely entertaining. The one thing that is an unequivocal success is the score by Burt Bacharach (who worked on it for 2 years while the troubled production dragged on) that includes the Oscar nominated song “The Look of Love.”
