The other giant asteroid disaster movie from 1998, DEEP IMPACT has a deep ensemble cast that could probably present a number of options for ‘National Treasure’ status, but we’re putting forward President Morgan Freeman for this honor. With a screenplay inspired by When Worlds Collide and Arthur C. Clarke’s The Hammer of God, guidance from Steven Spielberg, and a deft hand with multiple characters from director Mimi Leder, DEEP IMPACT is a sensitive and humanistic sci-fi that leans into the science and presents a more grounded version of what could happen if an asteroid threatened humanity’s existence.
