What does it mean to not finish a project? Should it be considered a failure if you enriched your own life and others’ while making it? How can we redefine success to not include financial gain (or even security)? Filmmaker Chris Wilcha dives headfirst into these questions and more in this wise, unpretentious, and wide-ranging inquiry into what fulfillment means.
In FLIPSIDE, Wilcha places interviews with former collaborators and subjects—including This American Life’s Ira Glass and industry heavyweights Judd Apatow and David Milch— alongside footage from his own unfinished projects and self-reflective autobiographical scenes. Framing it all are multiple visits to Wilcha’s hometown New Jersey record store which is—for better and worse—virtually unchanged since the 1990s. All of these disparate elements add up to an engaging, funny, and occasionally poignant examination of expectation versus reality, the weight of regret, and the search for meaning in the unfinished projects of one’s life.
