Facing dire financial circumstances, Asher (Kasan) accepts a strange but high-paying job measuring a hole in a wall to determine if it’s growing in size. Stationed in the basement of an ordinary home, he records his findings while negotiating his employer’s stringent rules. His boss Emerson (McDonald) believes the monotonous work serves a noble purpose, while Asher just finds it pointless drudgery. After countless hours of observation, could the hole finally be changing, or is Asher losing his grip on reality?

As we edge closer to total corporatocracy it’s difficult to confront today’s cultural climate feeling anything other than hopeless dread. HEAD LIKE A HOLE leans into our despair with an absurd premise that is both bleak and darkly comical, distilling our anxieties, our alienation, and our longing for a meaningful existence into a wildly satirical work. Politically pointed, existential, and razor-sharp, MacDonald-Lebell’s film intimates vast and horrific cosmic forces at work in the voracious capitalist machinery.

Shot in seven whirlwind days, HEAD LIKE A HOLE is an absolute triumph of DIY microbudget cinema. Director MacDonald-Lebelle donned every hat on the production–from the stark camerawork to the tight editing to the spare but innovative VFX that contribute to its vibrant and inventive storytelling. Raw, gritty, and provocative, HEAD LIKE A HOLE captures the urgency of the moment, offering an alternate view that is totally outrageous fantasy, but perhaps not so preposterous when compared to our real contemporary hellscape.
