Thirty years ago, The Brattle hosted the original Boston premiere of HOUSEHOLD SAINTS, so we are thrilled to welcome back this 90s indie gem for the first area screenings of a newly restored version. Unavailable for many years and now ripe for rediscovery, HOUSEHOLD SAINTS features amazing performances all around. The always wonderful Vincent D’Onofrio plays Joseph Santangelo, a butcher with a wicked sense of humor who ‘wins’ his wife Catherine (Tracey Ullman in one of her best big screen appearances) in a card game. The couple soon has Teresa, a daughter who, as she grows into a teenager, is played by the great Lili Taylor. Much to the consternation of her grounded parents, Teresa is closer in spirit to her father’s deceased, spiritual mother (Malina). Enthralled with religion, Teresa is determined to one day attain sainthood. One of the most charming indies of the 1990s, HOUSEHOLD SAINTS is a humanist comedy that further solidifies the cast’s legendary status.

“A warm-hearted jewel of a movie.” – Roger Ebert

Also screening…

In keeping with the intergenerational magic of HOUSEHOLD SAINTS, filmmaker Martina Savoca-Guay has crafted a compelling new documentary, THE MANY MIRACLES OF HOUSEHOLD SAINTS, revealing the improbable story behind the making of the film. Join us Saturday, January 6 at 2:45 for a special screening of the film, along with early Nancy Savoca shorts RENATA (1982) and BAD TIMING (1982), with Chris Cooper and Marianne Leone in person!
