Kurosawa ages his famous leading man about three decades and Mifune delivers an acting tour-de-force as an elderly man who, terrified by the threat of nuclear annihilation, tries to liquidate his business and convince his family to move with him to South America. His family, in response, takes him to court to have him declared incompetent.
