Brattle favorite Humphrey Bogart is exceptional in this dark noir thriller as Dix Steele, a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter who may or may not be a coldblooded murderer. Gloria Grahame plays the sympathetic neighbor who is convinced of Dix’s innocence but then begins to doubt herself as they become romantically involved and she experiences his violent temper.
