The first film from the revered Lucretia Martel, LA CIENAGA (which translates in English to The Swamp) focuses on a group of middle-class families on summer vacation. Although, on the surface, what occurs in the film is completely normal, if not a bit dull, Martel effectively focuses on the fetid, dank underbelly of the relationships creating a sense of foreboding for the viewer. It is a masterful debut film, and we can’t recommend it highly enough.
