Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

We kick off our tribute to the late actor/composer Ryuichi Sakamoto with one of his most iconic scores and film roles. In this off-kilter WWII drama, Sakamoto stars as the commander of a POW camp who becomes obsessed with a mysterious blond prisoner named Celliers (played by David Bowie). Tom Conti plays the titular Lawrence who tries to bring them together and Takeshi Kitano plays kindred spirit Gengo Hara.
“A multilayered, brutal, at times erotic tale of culture clash, and one of Oshima’s greatest successes.” – Janus Films
