In one of his most iconic roles, Jimmy Stewart plays a good-hearted, newly-appointed senator from an unnamed U.S. state whose naïveté is supposed to make him easy to manipulate by the political machine. The plan ends up backfiring, however, when he gets wise and takes a stand, thanks largely to the efforts of a jaded staffer played by Jean Arthur.
