Justin Kurzel’s exploration of a very recent tragedy in Australia’s history is everything we’ve come to expect from the director: whilst pulling no punches, the film manages to avoid being an exploitative blame note and instead builds the portrait of a tragedy that almost seems inevitable in its conclusion.

Featuring a quartet of extraordinary performances from Caleb Landry, Anthony LaPaglia, Judy Davis and Essie Davis, Kurzel’s film acts as both a lament for the horror that happened as well as a warning to the future to stop such heinous events ever occurring again.

Both upsetting and tender, ‘Nitram’ asks difficult questions without ever expecting resolute answers, instead focusing on the people behind the tragedy, trying to see them in their resolute complexities.
