Oscar’s Makeup Double Feature!
The inclusion of THE UGLY STEPSISTER and Kokuho make for some pretty interesting nominations in the Makeup and Hairstyling category at this year’s Oscars so we got to thinking about the origins of this category. “Best Makeup” wasn’t an official category until the 1982 awards when Rick Baker and team won for AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (and for good reason!). In 1968, however, John Chambers won a special award for achievement in makeup for PLANET OF THE APES. Looking at that makeup now, it still maintains a strange power—the apes are neither truly realistic nor truly fake looking, creating a strange effect that makes the fact that they talk and act like humans seem oddly more plausible.
