“I’m sorry. I know it’s not normal, but I can’t help it.” Carol White (Moore) has it all: wealth, safety, marriage, friendship, support. She is living the late ‘80s dream… except… Carol is sick and no one knows why or, worse yet, they don’t believe her. As her symptoms mount, Carol comes to believe that she has developed an allergy to the everyday chemicals that we are surrounded by all the time and are assured are perfectly safe. Finding no help from her husband, friends, and doctors, Carol becomes more and more isolated until she discovers Wrenwood, a dubious desert retreat designed to help people with ‘environmental illnesses.’ As Carol abandons her old life and tries to find solace in the new age techniques at Wrenwood, it is unclear whether she has found a solution or merely traded in one form of isolation for another.
One of the standout films of the ‘90s, a breakout film for Julianne Moore, and a mainstream(ish) success for Todd Haynes, SAFE is a masterfully shot meditation on societal pressures and the reality that there is no such thing as a ‘perfect’, or even ‘normal’, life. We are stunned to discover that this is the first time The Brattle will be playing SAFE and are excited to do so in this brand new 4K restoration from Sony Pictures Classics. [NH] Brattle Debut
