The social habits and cultural nuances of the Chinese American diaspora are already perfect for a romantic comedy but writer/director Alice Wu gives it a slight twist in this lesbian romance. There’s a meet cute, to be sure, between young workaholic surgeon “Wil” Wilhelmina (Krusiec) and talented up-and-coming dancer Vivian (Chen); yet the misaligned roles that make for a good rom-com are between the daughter and her overbearing, overprotective, over-involved mother, Gao (Chen).
