Stir Crazy
Director: Sidney Poitier Run Time: 111 min. Format: 35mm Film Release Year: 1980
Starring: Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor
When the pathologically optimistic Skip (Wilder) and his neurotic best friend Harry (Pryor) are wrongly accused of a bank robbery they are sentenced to 125 years in jail. The two try their best to survive in a rough Arizona prison but, ultimately, their only choice is to plan an elaborate escape during the annual rodeo. A huge success upon its release, STIR CRAZY maybe hasn’t aged that well (hello copious gay panic jokes) but it still remains an excellent showcase for the comedic talents–and remarkable chemistry–of its two leads.
