The film that got its director, Lou Ye, banned from making movies for two years by the Chinese government is back in a gorgeous new restoration. Mardar (Jia), a young motorcycle messenger transports the teenaged daughter of a shady businessman to her aunt’s house each day–while her father ‘entertains.’ Of course, they fall in love but soon, one kidnapping plot and a mysterious death later, the teenager is gone and Mardar is in jail. When he is released, he becomes obsessed with a dancer who is the hauntingly familiar double of his lost love. Upon its original release, this dazzling, steamy neo-noir homage to classic cinema elicited comparisons to Chungking Express, Vertigo, Diva, and, surprisingly, Splash!
Double Feature with FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE
