The visionary music video director Tarsem made his feature film debut with this wild, sci-fi riff on the sort of serial killer cat-and-mouse games made popular by Silence of the Lambs. Jennifer Lopez plays Catherine Deane, a child psychologist who is working on the development of an experimental technology that allows a person to enter the psychological mindscape of an unconscious patient. When a serial killer (played by a fantastically sinister Vincent D’Onofrio) goes into a coma before he can reveal the location of his latest victim, Deane is persuaded to enter his warped mind to see if she can find a clue. THE CELL might have been accused on its release of preferring style over substance, but when the style is this gorgeous and visually thrilling, it’s hard to think that’s a bad thing. Brattle Debut
