In David Cronenberg’s Stephen King adaptation, Walken plays Johnny Smith, a man who wakes from a coma with the ability to read the thoughts and futures of others with a touch. At first, Johnny tries to use his power to help people, but he quickly realizes that he is not always prepared for the consequences of his actions. He retreats from attention but a chance encounter with a political candidate drives him towards an act of courage.
