When Polish immigrant Ewa (Cotillard) is separated from her ailing sister at Ellis Island in 1921, she quickly falls prey to the charming but nefarious Bruno (Phoenix) who coerces her into a life of prostitution. Later, Ewa meets Bruno’s cousin, the charming stage magician Emil (Renner) and they start a tentative, doomed love affair.
