The Innocents

Director: Jack Clayton Run Time: 100 min. Release Year: 1961

Starring: Deborah Kerr, Martin Stephens, Megs Jenkins, Michael Redgrave, Pamela Franklin, Peter Wyngarde

Deborah Kerr stars as the ill-fated governess Miss Giddens in Jack Clayton’s atmospheric version of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw. Miss Giddens is brought on to care for the orphaned Miles and Flora at their uncle’s creepy estate, Bly. Once established there, she observes bizarre behavior that she believes can only be explained by a paranormal presence. With screenplay contributions from Truman Capote and widescreen, black and white cinematography by Freddie Francis (The Elephant Man), THE INNOCENTS is a classic of psychological horror.

“Kerr’s performance vibrates with complicated tension and vulnerability, as she communicates the internal life of a woman constantly at war with herself.” – Tasha Robinson, The Dissolve
