The Lost Daughter
Director: Maggie Gyllenhaal Run Time: 122 min. Format: DCP Release Year: 2021
Starring: Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, Jessie Buckley, Olivia Colman
Anchored by intense performances from Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley as the same woman at two different stages in her life, THE LOST DAUGHTER is a stupendous debut feature from writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal. Leda (Colman), a college professor, and translator, on vacation in Greece, crosses paths with Nina, a stressed but beautiful young mother (Johnson). Nina’s presence evokes memories in Leda and she begins to reflect on her own past and her complicated relationship with her two daughters. Motherhood, as she says, is a “crushing responsibility.”
“Gyllenhaal has thrown down a gauntlet to filmmakers and producers, to the movie industry at large, and to the future of the art.” – Richard Brody, New Yorker
“Savage, sophisticated, and sensual, The Lost Daughter is a psychological thriller that will titillate and terrify, then leave you stranded to pick up the tattered pieces.” – Kristy Puchko, Mashable
