Screens with Savoca’s early shorts
RENATA (1982) and BAD TIMING (1982)
Nancy Savoca’s first student film, RENATA, made alongside husband Rich Guay at NYU in the early ’80s, deftly explores the struggles of a young mother living in The Bronx played by Marianne Leone. Savoca’s second student film, BAD TIMING, follows Bobby and Denise, two twelve-year-olds who run away to Hollywood but don’t get further than an open mic night in New Jersey where Bobby’s aunt and uncle lay out the realities of life as a working actor. Filled with wry humor and quiet revelations about the pursuit of artistic dreams, BAD TIMING features Marianne Leone and the on-screen debut of future Academy Award winner, Chris Cooper—both of whom will be on hand for this screening!
