Legendary fabulist Guillermo del Toro summons all of the romantic pathos of the Universal Monster movies and makes it explicitly into a love story. When a shy, mute woman (Hawkins) encounters a mysterious amphibious creature (Jones) in the government facility where she works, she develops feelings for them and determines to release them from captivity.
