Inspired by a story by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy, THE VOURDALAK follows the travails of a hapless 19th century French aristocrat lost in the Serbian forest. On the run from Turkish bandits, the man seeks shelter at an isolated farm and soon finds himself at the mercy of a vourdalak, a kind of vampire that only devours its loved ones. This gothic, grand-guignol new film brings a touch of whimsy to an earthy folktale with the use of puppetry to give the titular monster form.
“A proudly old-fashioned Gothic fable with grain and grit, the delectable ‘Vourdalak’ is swift to announce in its early moments that we are in the hands of a skillful stylist.” – Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com
