Perhaps remembered primarily for the hit title song, TO SIR, WITH LOVE flips the gritty, pseudo-realism of BLACKBOARD JUNGLE on its head by casting Poitier as a principled teacher in a pleasantly sentimental film that mythologizes both teaching and Poitier’s legendary dignity. Mark Thackeray (Poitier) takes a temporary job at a tough London school while he waits to hear about an engineering position. Once there he faces unruly students, uncaring fellow staffers, and his own ambivalence about being an educator but still manages to make an impact on the lives of his class.
