Of course, after the phenomenal success of PURPLE RAIN and his ascendance to superstardom, Prince pretty much could do whatever he wanted… And it turned out what he wanted to do was make a romantic caper inspired by the films of the Thirties. The studio unwisely greenlit this film without even seeing a script and it is, consequently sort of a mess, but Prince’s charisma, the presence of Kristin Scott Thomas in her screen debut, and (of course) a killer soundtrack all make it the stuff that cult classics are made of.
