Samira Makhmalbaf’s follow up to her acclaimed debut feature The Apple, BLACKBOARDS centers on the surreal image of grown men walking through desert mountains with large blackboards strapped to their backs. These are itinerant teachers, roaming the remote Iran/Iraq border in search of students. Unfortunately, everyone is too busy just trying to survive and have no time to be taught. Makhmalbaf fuses fiction and reality, using non-professional actors but inventing their circumstances, to paint a picture of life in this harsh and challenging environment.

“An indelible and ultimately moving vision of humanity” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times
