Max Ophüls’ swirling, curious camera tracks its way through this potboiler of a film noir with Barbara Bel Geddes playing Leonora, a young woman who has always dreamed of being rich, and Robert Ryan as Smith Ohlrig, the pathological millionaire who marries her just to spite his psychiatrist. Of course, they are a miserable couple and, with marital bliss not on the horizon, it’s only a question of who will destroy who first.
