Clash by Night
Director: Fritz Lang Run Time: 105 min. Format: 35mm Film Release Year: 1952
Starring: Barbara Stanwyck, J. Carrol Naish, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan
CLASH BY NIGHT might be a bit more melodrama than film noir but it is undoubtedly “noir-coded” as Eddie Mueller would say. Barbara Stanwyck stars as a woman who has returned to her two-bit fishing town after a scandal on the East Coast, meets a crass misogynist (Ryan), and, in a classic case of hating-each-other-so-much-it-must-be-love, the two eventually start a disastrous affair.
