Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Opens on March 19

Director: Stanley Kramer Run Time: 108 min. Format: DCP Release Year: 1967

Starring: Katharine Hepburn, Katharine Houghton, Sidney Poitier, Spencer Tracy

A “Very Important Picture” when it was released just 6 months after the Supreme Court made bans on interracial marriage illegal, GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER is heavy with cultural significance. This weight, unfortunately, might lead contemporary audiences to think of the film as dated or too serious, but its reputation belies what is actually a deft and extremely well played comedic drama. When a liberal-minded couple (Tracy and Hepburn in their final on screen pairing) welcome their daughter (Houghton) home from her Hawaiian vacation, they are surprised to meet her new fiancée (Poitier) who happens to be a Black man.

Please Note: All in-person screenings at the Brattle now require proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test (within 72-hours). See the Covid Response page for complete details.
