Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict the Sunday, June 21 screening with the filmmaker in person had been canceled.
In British filmmaker Ben Rivers’ monomythical new feature, told in a series of vignettes, a girl named Moon (a remarkable Guo-Barker) wanders through unfamiliar landscapes in a world seemingly free of adults. On her journey, Moon meets and observes many other children—and one very patient turtle—learning from them about different ways of existing. As a startling centerpiece, Rivers presents a faithful screen version of Don DeLillo’s one act play, The Word for Snow, in which the fate of language is discussed in the face of a natural world that is gradually disappearing.
Gorgeous, evocative, atmospheric, oblique, and emotionally affecting, MARE’S NEST is a unique cinematic odyssey—one that you may walk away from feeling like you have experienced a myth about our own era transmitted from some distant future.
“A film of plants and animals, of car graveyards and caves, of games and imagination, and, ultimately, a film of great beauty and mystery.” – Andréa Picard, Toronto International Film Festival
