25th Anniversary!
2001 was truly a watershed year for elevated animation coming out of Japan. Not only, did it see the release of Miyazaki’s SPIRITED AWAY, but also Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, Satoshi Kon’s stunning MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, and this operatic sci-fi adventure. A reimagining of both Osamu Tezuka’s manga of the same name and Fritz Lang’s landmark silent film, Rintaro’s METROPOLIS takes place in a futuristic city where humans exploit a robot underclass, and a young boy forms a bond with a humanoid android that knows nothing of her true, cataclysmic purpose.
