75th Anniversary!

In this adaptation of Strindberg’s tragedy, the class struggle of 19th century Sweden plays out between the beautiful daughter of an aristocratic family (Bjork) and one of her father’s servants (Palma). This rarely-screened treasure of Swedish cinema was at the heart of a lawsuit that The Brattle took all the way to the Massachusetts Supreme Court in 1954 to break the Blue Law that forbid the screening of certain films on Sundays.
